ok try not to Sleep through this.

my mate called me up the other week and asked if i fancied a fish with him down the lake that he bailiffs, so i said yeah and we agreed to fish it that weekend for a quick 24 hour fish. i was not really expecting to catch i just thought it would be a good social to catch up and have a chat. saying all that i did spend a good hour or so with the marker rod finding where the silt meets the gravel and spodding out about 4 pints of basingstokes anglings finest maggots, once i done that i put some fresh rigs on the rods which were a bit of a home made jobby. they were normal knotless knot hair rigs on a korda size 6 long shank and at the end of the shank were it started to curve i attached a little korda ring. now because i thought i would try lob worms i was a bit concearned that with a live one on the rig it could mess up my presantation, so i decided to freeze a kill the lob worms the night before the trip and on the way there they would hopefully defrost, with this bait in mind, going back to the rigs i made them with really long hairs nearly three inches in length in order to thread the whole lob worms on. so once that horrible task was completed i attached a p.v.a bag full of maggots to the rig and out they went to the spots i had been spoding. sorted time for a cup of tea lol.
at bout 7 my mate woody gave me a shout and he was in, after a very dull battle a smelly 12 pound bream graced his net, not really what we were after, never mind. after bout an hour chatting his rod went again, very slow take and as he hit into it we both agreed it was another bream, well we were gob smacked after netting it in the dark and there in the bottom of the net was a lovely mirror carp. we weighed it in at a lovely 25.04 mirror. few picks and back it went.
after lots more tea and chatting we decided to turn in for the night. at 0530 my alarm screemed off, i jumped out of my bag abd stubble into my boots, i hit the rod and could tell it was a carp, after a shoert period into the battle i looked down and sore i had my boots on the wrong feet, doh! never mind and after a spirited battle i landed a lovely common of 27.08, my mate woody done the honours with the camara and we slipped her back. after what only felt like 5 mins sleep my rod ripped of again to a single toner, i hit into it and could tell straight away it was a good one, after a slow but very heavy battle i got a glimpse of the beast, it was a fish called goat eye and was rumoured to be around the 40 mark my legs went to jelly and as soon as that happend disaster struck, the hook pulled i was gutted and to be fair so was woody. anyway after the heart ache i went to bed a very grumpy boy. i awoke again an hour later to a few bleeps on the rod and the line was tight, so i decided to hit it, thinking again it was a bream, i wound it in, then all of a sudden it woke up and i had a fight on my hands after 10 mins woody done the honours with the net and it was mine, we weighed it in at a solid 32.00. it was a good end, but it could of been so much better...............

Thanks for that Dave, I enjoyed reading it. thumbs up

Gutted for you losing that big fish, iv not lost one as big as that, but seen my fishing buddy do it, and you just cannot find the words to say anything, I think there was a few mins of silence between us!!

I think lob worms slugs maggots are awesome bait, but I just don’t have the confidence in leaving them out for more than a few hours, thinking they have come off.
Good tip in freezing them, iv done this myself.

What do anyone else think about using lob worms slugs maggots, confident using them??

well i went fishing this weekend, i knew it was going to be a tad on the cold side, but!! i did not expect the lake to be bloody frozen! managed to find a very small area that was shelterd by trees that had not frozen, so i opted for there, although it was miles away from were the fish hold up in winter, nothing happend untill bout 3pm when the delkim made a couple of twitchs and normally with delkims thats a carp farting in the lake next door, but it kept on twitching, so i gently hit into it expecting it to be a bream, but it wasnt it was a carp!!! i couldnt believe it! after a very slow fiight it took some line and by this point was well under the ice, i managed to get it back but the line was caught on the ice. no matter how hard i pulled it just wouldnt break the ice. so i got my mate to come down with a bait boat and try and ram the ice to break it, but it didnt work. nothing would move it, i must of been there for nearly an hour, i tried every thing, in the end i put so much preasure on the line snapped!!!! 17lb x-line!!! i had nothing after that and packed up at 8pm, by this point the rod tips had frozen in the lake.... oh well, i done my david bailey bit and got a few photos while i was blanking so i will put them up soon.
